About the Artist
Brian Knudsen (b. 1972) is a native California artist and founder of Momentum Arc, creating hand-sculpted relief works inspired by wave movement, physical tension, light, and shadow.
Knudsen came to art through an unconventional path. After more than 25 years working with the human body through personal training and physical therapy, his attention to movement, resistance, structure, and force found a new expression in sculpture.
A lifelong surfer and bodyboarder, he draws from decades spent in and around the Southern California ocean. Rather than depicting waves literally, he approaches them as physical systems—exploring tension and flow, stability and disruption, and the moment energy gathers, changes direction, and releases through form.
Each work is shaped by hand using a custom relief medium developed through ongoing experimentation. Raised surfaces, carved channels, broken edges, and sweeping arcs create physical depth, while changing light continuously transforms the work.
Based in San Diego, Knudsen continues to develop Momentum Arc through intimate reliefs, large-scale works, and modular installations—shaping a sculptural language rooted in movement, material, and the California coast.
Why “Shaper”
In surf culture, a shaper hand-shapes a surfboard to meet the demands of a wave. Brian repurposes the term: rather than shaping a board to ride the wave, he shapes the wave itself.
It’s a connection earned through decades in the Southern California ocean—a lifelong surfer and bodyboarder translating the movement, power, and architecture of waves into sculpture.
Origin Story
How did we get here? I’m on social media and I have a gallery?! A year ago I wasn’t planning to become an artist.
It started as a prank at work. I wanted to stir up some energy for the new year and make our gym walls feel different, so I threw some paint on canvas with no real expectations. Then I made a wave—and I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
I started waking up early to create and staying up late thinking about what to try next. I refined, scrapped, started over, laughed at myself, and kept going. What began as a simple wall project became an obsession with texture, movement, and capturing that moment right before a wave breaks.
I’ve never had formal artistic training. Maybe that’s part of why I approach this differently. I’m still experimenting, still shaping, and still following where it goes.
Somehow, that experiment became Momentum Arc.
